  • On February 8th 2010 the group Paavo releases its second record Cançó del Paó (Song of the Peacock in Catalan). On the 26st of January the group start an extensive tour in Sweden.

    – There is nothing I want more than to spread the Paavo word, says Sofia Jernberg, one of two bandleaders.

    – The music Sofia and I write is in constant change, I can hear movement in different directions in every tune, says Cecilia Persson, who is the other bandleader. The band then makes the music become Paavo with everything that that implies, particularly when it comes to improvisation, energy and sound.

On Cançó del Paó, the seven-piece band Paavo – backed by three guests – for the first time makes a cover: O virgo miserere mei.

    – Jazz meets music of the middle age in Paavo's way, says Sofia.

  • Fredrik Nordström Trio
    MAYDAY!
    CD / FYR012

Finally a new album with the trio of Fredrik Nordström, Palle Danielsson and Fredrik Rundqvist! Their first album Live was recorded at the Glenn Miller Café in Stockholm in 2001 and was released in 2002 on Dragon Records. This was actually the first time this trio played together and the album, featuring evergreens and jazz standards was a great success.

The trio has been on several tours, performing standards as well as original music in their open minded way. The trio format with saxophone, bass and drums is naked and demanding but also full of possibilities with a lot of room for all members. This second album Mayday! includes some tunes that has been played by the trio for years as well as some new, interesting material composed by Nordström for this studio session. This is music; swinging, lyrical, urban as well as inspired by folk music, filled with great interplay, beautiful melodies and even some surprises. Modern jazz, if you prefer.

  • Strandberg, Sandell & Thorman
    STOCKHOLM SWEDEN POLYPHONY
    CD / FYR011-IS03

At some point modern jazz became too contemporary and ceased to be jazz altogether. The music of Emil Strandberg, Sten Sandell and Patric Thorman could be called anything, but most obvious improv (Sandell being one of Sweden's most well-known improvising musicians from groups such as Gush and Sten Sandell Trio). And actually, what this trio are up to is exactly where jazz should be at today; it is improvised, energetic, inventive, communicative and swinging.

To play modern jazz without drums has its starting point in Jimmy Giuffre's 1961 trio and offers possibilities for tight, fast-changing music that shows connections to modern composed music. For Found You Recordings Improvised Series, the trio, which have been together since 2006, have recorded their first album. Strandberg and Thorman can be heard together on two releases with different percussionists from the RR-R label and Strandberg had a record out on Bonnier Amigo with pianist Jonas Östholm in 2008.

Stockholm Sweden Polyphony gives us open sounds, nevertheless is it not improvised due to principles. It is simply the means necessary to achieve beautiful, true and devoted music in which every statement each player makes has importance for the listener.

  • Two Sounds Ensemble
    FICTIONS
    CD / FYR010-IS02

"Med små medel, och en sparsmakad akustisk klang som ibland förvrängs av diverse effekter, skapar duon något så ovanligt som ett verkligt formmedvetet ögonblicksverk."
    -SvD (5/6)

Joakim Simonsson is the pianist behind Open Trio, earlier released on Found You Recordings. Together with Stefan Wistrand on bass clarinet, they form Two Sounds Ensemble, who play a searching, melodical improjazz. The debut Inversions I-VI was released by Einnicken Records in 2004.

  • French classical music in new jazz arrangements performed with a Scandinavian touch.
“Impressions” is the result of a unique project that has been evolving during the last couple of years. Its strength lies in combining the music of the two French composers Debussy and Ravel with a sensibility and lyricism that is typical for Scandinavian jazz. On one hand, the trio pays tribute to the impressionist masters by presenting selected pieces from their repertoire in a new and original way. But they also go further, utilising the harmonic structures and the strong motives of the original music as a basis for improvisation, making it possible to expand the musical ideas in the compositions and to merge the past and the present into a unique synthesis.

The trio was formed in Gothenburg 2003, where the members all studied at the Music
    Academy. Apart from the trio, the members are active in various kinds of musical projects;
The leader, Peter Knudsen is also one of the driving forces in the Swedish jazz group blåeld, both as a musician, arranger and composer. The group released their debut album Aurora (FRCD-032) in the fall of 2006. The bassist Fredrik Nilsson can be heard with the genre-crossing group My Closest Friend and the jazz/folk inspired duo Små Blå, to name a few. Drummer Daniel Olsson has toured and recorded with pianist Joakim Simonsson in the groups Pidgin (featuring Joakim Milder) as well as the lyrical Open Trio.
