Lip Service attacks again with the new 5-track EP ”Black Cat”. After ”Copy Kill Original”- the debut-album of last year- the duo is back with a vengeance!
”Call us the traitors, call us the hedonists, we´re not gonna show up for a god that don´t exists! You´d better start a surveillance on us and watch our every move, we´re an underground movement planning to attack you!”
Louise & Andreas Jismark´s view of the world today might not be the most cheerful and naive. But the duo, though their apparent cynism, have not given up hope.
Not at all.
The music and lyrics of ”Black Cat” is a raised fist. Possibly at it´s peak with the fourth track ”Monkey See Monkey Do” (lyric above) The very hard and monotone track proves a band that is not too happy about quite a lot of things.
But before that song the electroband kicks off the EP with an ironic commentary; ”Model Actress Whatever”. The track, originally recorded with Andreas previous band -The April Tears in the year 2000- is as valid in Lip Service´s 2008 interpretation.
”Weve been playing this song live a while and we felt we needed to do it in our version; more static, more electrofied and quite a bit colder”, Andreas explains the choice to do a ”cover version on himself”.
Track two ”In Black” shows no pardon. Louise is in sync with the machines and in absolute control. And allthough very sexy imagery, she never seems to be an accesable object:
”Bounds and borders of the intellect has prevented too many from too much for too many years” Louise sighs.
”We have a message. And if that makes us political, so be it. We are clearly not encouraging tyrants and preachers nor stupidity to have more power, whether in politics or religion, if you understand what I mean.”
”Black Cat” also includes ”Gato Blanco” which seems to underline all of the above to the rhythm of a slow, hard, seducing beat.
And to finish it all off Lip Service covers a remix of Depeche Mode! The bands ”Copy Kill Original”- philosophy of last year truly take new proportions. ”Never let me Down Again (Aggro Mix)” is….well..aggro.
Lip Service is in control. And it seems they want their listeners to take their individual control too.
