  • The Black Hotels are an indie rock band from Johannesburg, South Africa. Formed in 2006 their first release, a five-track EP called Beautiful Mornings, made them one of the most critically acclaimed South African bands of 2007. The EP was recorded over a weekend at JSL Studios in Primrose with the singles Natalie and Beautiful Mornings becoming instant radio hits.

    The band’s first full-length album Films for the Next Century was released in May 2009 and was nominated for a South African Music Award for Best Alternative Album.

    In April 2011 the band released their second full-length album, Honey Badger, with critics comparing the record to Arcade Fire, Interpol, Bowie, Blondie and REM. The first single from the album, No Sign of Science, was play listed on national radio and campus stations around the country.

    In 2011 The Black Hotels supported Kings of Leon in Cape Town and Johannesburg. They have also toured with UK bands Starsailor and Ash.

    Beautiful Mornings was recorded at JSL Studios in Primrose and produced by Matthew Fink. The singles Natalie and Beautiful Mornings became instant radio hits with both songs reaching #1 on the 5FM Hi5@5.

    In May 2009 the band released their first full-length album titled Films for the Next Century. The album was recorded at SABC studios in Auckland Park and once again produced by Matthew Fink. In February 2010 Films for the Next Century was nominated for a South African Music Award in the category Best Alternative English Album.

    The Black Hotels are a regular feature on the local festival circuit with appearances including Oppikoppi, Rocking The Daisies, Rocking The Garden, On The Night, Old Mutual Summer Concerts, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Durban Botanical Gardens, Unplugged Festival, Earth Hour, XBox Summer Tour and others.
