    När jag startade Vapnet var det till viss del en reaktion mot rockbandsnormen, det fanns en poäng i att ha en sättning med fyra blåsare, en gitarrist och en sångare. Då kunde folk fortfarande bli besvikna över att vi inte hade en riktig trummis. Nu bryr sig ingen om det.
    Alla tidigare inspelningar har gjorts hemma hos mig och det viktigaste instrumentet har varit min dator. Vapnets nya skiva är annorlunda, den kan nog klassas som en traditionell popskiva. Låtarna spelades in tillsammans i en riktig studio och vi har använt oss av många akustiska instrument: stråkar, vibrafon, orkesterpukor, cembalo och så vidare.
    Vi spelade in Döda fallet på detta sätt av flera anledningar: dels så hade vi redan börjat spela med en trummis live och dels så hade jag börjat hata att sitta vid datorn. Men det var även ett försök att hitta en väg bort från den ständiga positioneringen inom popmusiken.
    Jag känner mig så trött på hur gamla modernistiska värden fortfarande håller ett stenhårt grepp runt popmusiken och -kritiken idag. Samtidigt som Mojo-kulturen slentrianmässigt hånas så dyrkar journalister fortfarande samma idéer om ”det nya och det unga” En trend ska avlösa en annan, och vid varje skifte ska vi anstränga oss för att det ska kännas nytt och meningsfullt. Fortfarande är det några år från sextiotalet och framåt som präglar hela synen på hur musik skall bedömas och utvecklas. Men för mig är alla strävanden efter ”modern...

    Plötsligt händer det inte är en melankolisk uppgörelse med livet som glider förbi. Inga explosioner krävs, inga chockmöten av kärlek, det är inte på liv eller död. Livet är en bloggkommentar, ett lunk, en datorskärm sent på kvällen, ett finmaskigt reflekterande utan att uppröra. Helt plötsligt har det smugit sig på, livet. Helt plötsligt är livet där, och det hände inte. Och man undrar hur det gick till. Någonstans söker man svar, svåra att hitta, man konstaterar bara att plötsligt händer det inte.

    "Vapnet occupy a space somewhere between Swedish dance and Swedish pop, favoring the motion of the former and the bright melodies of the latter. Perhaps there's nothing intrinsically original or even noteworthy about that combination, but the band-- which includes Martin Abrahamsson, Martin Hanberg, Anna Modin, and David Nygård-- puts a personal stamp on its music. Vapnet favor open-ended song structures that permit long instrumental passages and unexpected melodic twists, even though Abrahamsson and Hanberg typically write traditional verse-chorus patterns. In 2006, when Sweden seemed to produce great acts on a weekly basis, Vapnet's dense production and inventive arrangements made their full-length debut, Jag Vet Hur Man Väntar, a stand-out, one whose concept-- each song was named after a street in their hometown of Östersund (thanks to reader Fredrik for that info)-- helped to frame the music without constraining it.

    Något Dåligt Nytt Har Hänt, their EP-length follow-up, isn't an epilogue to that album, but an expansion of its sound. Vapnet have obviously spent a lot of time in the studio since Jag Vet Hur Man Väntar, laboring over these new tracks and ambitiously filling each one with as many ideas as they'll hold.     "I don’t speak a word of Swedish beyond what I’ve picked up at Ikea, but that hasn’t stopped Vapnet’s debut full-length, Jag Vet Hur Man Väntar, from becoming my very own summer album... It is, of course, closer to Super Furry Animals or Belle & Sebastian than current faves like Lily Allen, Nelly Furtado, or Girl Talk, but the album evokes a distinctive lull particular to these oppressively hot months. So, as I endure the sun and humidity, I like to think Vapnet is really singing about rabbits and swimming holes and first love.

    Language, after all, is relative. These lyrics obviously mean something to the band members, and whether or not I grasp the finer points of these songs is mostly beside the point, because Vapnet speak fluent pop. As someone who often prizes lyrical boldness over musical innovation, I don’t make this claim lightly.     Songwriter and guitarist Martin Abrahamsson and singer Martin Hanberg formed Vapnet as an offshoot of the group Sibiria. In 2005 they released the EP Ge Dom Våld, which in retrospect didn’t hint at the complexity of arrangements or the texturing of instruments that highlights Jag Vet Hur Man Väntar.
