Well, you might have been in Rio de Janeiro, you might have been on the beaches in and around Copacabana, and you have probably seen the hills with the "Favelas" in and around Rio - This is it, this is what people "up there" listen to besides pagode...

About Baile Funk:
The original "Baile Funk" or "Funk Carioca" and the slower mid tempo "Charme" style were born in the slum on the hills in and around Rio de Janeiro.

These original sounds of the "favelas" better known as "Rap Proibido" or "Rap Proibidão" were almost always live recorded and never available in regular stores.

Only available in the suburb street corners, it is still quiet controvercial music and actually forbidden to handle with threats of penalty for up to 2 years in prison if played in public. It is dangerous music to play out loud because of the lyrics and the sympathies for either the gang Comando Vermelho (C.V), Complexo do Alemão, or Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP), and you never know what relations people around you have with these gangs so you need to know that you play the "correct" music, because one thing is for sure - In Rio de Janeiro most poor people have some relation or know someone in a gang.

The songs in general describes criminal activities as well as tributes to the most well known gang Comando Vermelho and the on going gang war with the sworn enemy "Favela" Complexo Do Alemão and of course the police and the special unit BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais).

Comando Vermelho was formed in the early 70's by officers in prison after the revolution in Brazil. Today they handle 90% of the drug distribution to Europe. They are in charge when the drugs passes Rio De Janeiro and are loaded on the vessels in Rio and Itaguai harbor with destination Rotterdam or Amsterdam, but C.V also have a social function.

They help people living in the favelas taking care of such things as school, medical care, and other functions that does not work in the slum where also a lot of decent people live because of poverty. The price of that help is 100% loyalty and silence.

On location in the suburban world of Rio we managed to record several MC's on local Baile Funk events and partys. This album also includes the original cut of "Rap Das Armas" recorded in 1998 with slight different lyrics that sets off in the favela known as "Cidade De Deus" (that became well known after the movie with the same name), that is a part of the borough of Jacarepaguá in the western zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The equipments we used varied from time to time and the songs were originally saved on cdr discs. Therefore sound quality may sometimes be a little bit too "live" with disted vocals and even some drop outs or scratches - If you would like to download any of these songs you might listen to the whole track in order to be aware of damages...
