I stället tar sig Måndotter an ett inspirerat urval av egna sånger, traditionellt material och favoritlåtar från olika håll och stilar. Och hon gör det med stora mått av såväl pondus som känsla och förståelse.

»Songs From The River« innehåller sju sånger som tidigare gavs ut på 'miniplattan' »Songs From The Ruins«. Åtta spår är alltså helt nya och fyra av dem är skrivna av Lena Måndotter själv.

Fyra av låtarna (»La Llorona«, »The Water Is Wide«, »Sto Pa Kai Sto Ksanaleo« och »Avinu Malkeinu«) finns med i Måndotters nya film Letters To A Young Singer, som har premiär vid Lilla Filmfestivalen Båstad sommaren 2009.

På »Songs From The River« medverkar musiker som Åsa Gjerstad, Ronnie Hall, Pierre Engström, Allan Skrobe, Johan Melin, Tim Adams, Lotta Wenglén, Melanie Harrold och Alexander Iberer. Skivan är inspelad av Lotta Wenglén och producerad av Lena Måndotter.

To sing Leonard Cohen is a daring project. His many fans are devoted and very sensitive. You have to tread very carefully not to offend anyone.

In that sense, Swedish vocalist Lena Måndotter is almost foolhardy to release her new album »Songs of Leonard Cohen«. But after singing these songs live all over Sweden for over a year, she can be pretty confident that this album will go down well, even among the most loyal Cohen fans. Lena Måndotter had in fact no plan to record the songs at all, but the reactions at her shows have been so strong the she had to reconsider. Lena Måndotter recorded the songs with a small, acoustic band with the ambition to perform the songs in a personal but still respectful way. Chello, guitars, bouzouki, mandola. The arrangements are tasteful, yet imaginative. And they create the perfect backup to Lena Måndotter's magnificent, deep voice.
