EN SE DE
Ustad Z.M. Dagar & Ustad Z.F. Dagar, Raag Malkauns, Bombay 1968

69 minutes of pure beauty and emotion.
In the old days, when the most classic of the north indian music forms, Drupad, was played
in the courts, the singer was often accompanied by the ancient string instrument, the Rudra
Veena. No more so during the last 100 years. But - here is a unique recording from a private
concert in1968 with the greatest maestro on the instrument, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar in his own
house in Chembur, Bombay. He is playing jugalbandi, a duet in the old way, with his
brother vocalist Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.
Together they give us Raag Malkauns, a late evening raga with only five notes, and for more than an hour
fills it with beauty that should appeal not only to the lovers of indian music, but just as much to
a lover of Arvo Pärt or New Age. This is meditative music for real.
