    The double-CD "Pane & Uhelna panev" is the latest offering from Umbrtka, one of the most unique bands in the whole metal underground. Over the past eight years, Umbrtka has amassed a small, but devoted following, playing what the four band members call "grey metal". The music could be described as a loving deconstruction of black metal, but that hardly does it justice. This collective of Czech poets, painters and musicians manages to express the absurdity of it all through blending good old black metal with doomy and industrial overtones and outbursts of mind-bending silliness, which is especially true for the CD "Pane". Grey metal incorporates both accomplished and spectacularly inept playing, singing and songwriting. Sheet metal plates are sometimes used instead of drums, progressive elements clash with raw production and rawer emotions. Hear this maelström of weirdness for yourself. And play it loud...
