Simon Edgren left the small town of Jönköping for Stockholm. It was the autumn of 2000. He brought his guitar and his much critizised falesetto voice to study political science. But the study results did not end up his top priority, since the exploration of the capital city´s beer joints and indierock clubs took too much of his time. Somewhere between the drinks and smoke Simon ran into Hans Pettersson and Mathias Johansson, which ended up being an early Ed Greene line-up. Simon got introduced to the music of such greats as Steve Earle, Buddy Miller, Dolly Parton and The Band.
Ed Greene have played a lot of different shows and venues along the years; ranging from peoples living rooms, via regular rock clubs, to a show at the parking lot of the Emmaboda Festival(?!), before an ecstatic crowd. Performances, always much appreciated and with a loyal fan base, have often turned into sing along-parties of gospel-like proportions.
The album was recorded in the late summer of 2005 and ended up including 10 songs. Call it roots-pop, americana or alt.country. The self-titled ”Ed Greene” is a feast of strings filled with heartfelt drums and angelesque back-up vocal harmonies, topped off with dobro, lap steel and fiddle.
”I still don´t sound anything like Johnny Cash when I sing, but my favourite old guy has always been Neil Young, so I don´t care.” is Simons own words about the result, which will make us all happy. The band makes their own interpretations of their old heroes, and creates their very own ”old guy”, Ed Greene. The music will fill a void in the swedish music scene, and hopefully also in your heart and soul.
Despite a seducing groove , and with musicians from great swedish bands such as Fireside, Tiger Lou, Captain Murphy and Blood Music, it´s the charismatic vocalist and songwriter Simon Edgren who gives Ed Greene its very own special characteristic sound.
To put it short: Ed Greene is one of the best, swedish records within its genre in many, many years.
